Accredited Online Accounting Degrees (D-G)

Along with many other online degree programs, accredited online accounting degrees have grown in popularity as more people choose to learn via the internet than in the traditional classroom setting. According to U.S. News and world Report, online course enrollment has grown steadily over the past decade, with 32 percent of those seeking higher education taking at least one online course during 2011. This growth indicates the need for colleges to address the desire for quality, flexible education required by today’s workforce.

The key to choosing an online program is to choose one that is accredited. Accredited online accounting degrees are recognized by employers and other schools, while those without accreditation may not be considered valid. Many students have completed an online degree program only to learn that the lack of accreditation makes their degree less valuable than one obtained from an accredited school. These accredited online accounting degrees offer valuable education that is recognized by employers while providing the flexibility necessary for today’s working adult.

Ferris State University

Ferris State University was founded as the dream of Woodridge Nathan Ferris, who was born near Spencer, New York. Mr. Ferris attended rural public schools, later claiming they were the “horror of his life.” When he was 14, he entered the academy in Spencer and attended his first teaching institute in Waverly at the age of 16. In 1871, he entered the Oswego Normal and Training school, where he learned under the Pestalozzian theory of learning by doing rather than learning through theory. In 1874, he became the principal at Spencer Free Academy, and after his second year, left to found a private school. He attempted several ventures in establishing a school before taking a position as a superintendent in Pittsfield, Illinois. After five years, he left the position, vowing never to work in public education again, and moving his family to Big Rapids, Michigan. He opened the Big Rapids Industrial School in 1884.

Big Rapids Industrial School operated in temporary quarters in the Vandersluis Block of the city. In 1885, the name of the school was changed to the Ferris Industrial School, and, in 1894, the school moved into a new building, known as Old Main, on the corner of Oak and Ives Street. The school became Ferris Institute in 1898. In 1949, the school was given to the state of Michigan as a gift, but before the state took ownership, Old Main and the Old Pharmacy buildings were destroyed by fire. The state rebuilt the campus and it was renamed Ferris State College in 1963, gaining university status in 1987.

College of Business

The College of Business at Ferris provides career-oriented business education that prepares graduates for the real issues they will face in the business world. Friends University

Friends University was officially founded in 1898, but its beginnings go back further to when the Christian Churches of Kansas built the largest educational facility west of the Mississippi River, Garfield University. The college only graduated one class before closing its doors due to financial difficulty. Despite temporarily opening as Garfield Central Memorial University, the college closed for good in 1893. Five years later, the run-down building was purchased by James M. Davis, a businessman, who then offered the building to the Kansas Society of Friends, better known as Quakers. His only condition was that the group raise $50,000 as a permanent endowment for the college. The group was successful and the university opened in 1898. The school operated as a Quaker institution until the 1930s when an independent Board of Trustees took over operations. The school still has an amicable relationship with the Society of Friends, however. In 1985, Friends began offering degree completion programs designed for adults wishing to continue their education. Over the years, the university has continued to grow, and today, approximately 2,800 students attend the college.
